Many of us simply adore this genre of movies. Horror movies can gather your attention and cause that well-known spine-chilling feeling. If you are a true fan of this type of movie you’ll probably try to create a special atmosphere. Switch off the lights, and turn up the volume, because visual effects are not enough for a complete experience, you probably already know that.
Constant tension and uneasiness occasionally interrupted with flashy images and sharp sound effects is something that is expected of a good horror movie. Horror movies are often cloaked in mystery, some of them have deeper meanings with strong massage. Here is the list of the top 10 horror movies ever made:
1IT (2017)

If you are a person with coulrophobia (fear of clowns) this horror movie can be particularly scary for you. Based on a novel by Steven King and directed by Andy Muschietti, this movie follows a group of misfit kids aged between 9 and 12. This small gang of outsiders (loser’s club) is faced with constant bullying in school and problems at home. Their fates become connected when they have to face a common enemy; the creepy shape-shifting clown Pennywise, portrayed by Bill Skarsgard.
This sinister clown is awakened every 27 years to feed on the children. The loser’s club becomes his next target, all kids are stalked by the same entity. Pennywise can recognize and manifest your worst fears and nightmares. Each of the protagonists will have to face his demons and horrors. Together, they’ll try to conquer their fears and defeat the evil clown by denying him his favorite food- children’s fear.
The action takes place in the small town of Derry in 1989. This year will be crucial for movie characters, overcoming your fears, and dealing with your problems are essential parts of growing up. Remember your childhood, your concerns, doubts, and fears. How did you deal with IT? Who knows? Maybe you defeated Pennywise when you were a boy or girl, you just haven’t realized that back then.
2Insidious (2010)

Astral projection is the focus of this creepy horror movie. When a small boy without any scientific and medical explanation falls into a coma he becomes a weasel for ghosts and demonic entities. This departure in other worlds can be a one-way ticket.
Producer James Wan has successfully presented his capabilities of creating constant tension and jumpiness. This horror movie is showing how nightmares can become reality, especially in other worlds. When a family moves into a frightening house, strange things are starting to happen; things around the house are moving by themselves, doors are slamming…
The situation gets much worse when a red-faced man (a demonic entity) snatches the boy’s soul and takes it to the other realm, deeper into the astral worlds. Desperate Parents portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne are seeking help from psychic Elise Rainer (Lin Shaye).
She will recognize the boy’s ability to go “beyond” and try to bring back his soul to his body. This won’t be a walk in the park, since other ghosts and demonic entities will try to step into the world of living through the boy’s body.
This horror movie is worth watching, it contains a vast spectrum of great audio-visual effects, and one of the main characteristics is a contrast between dialogs and sound effects. The protagonists are talking in low voice, almost whispering, while the sound effects are pretty high, which creates additional tension.
3Halloween (1978)

The first time was introduced in 1978, directed by John Carpenter, inspired by Alfred Hitchcock Pshyco, this movie is one of the first representatives of slash- genre. Michael Myers becomes the legendary antagonist and serial killer who committed his first crime back in 1963. He murdered his older sister Judith by stabbing her to death, Michael was only 6 years old. For 15 years he is incarcerated in a mental institution, from where he escaped on 30 October 1978.
After escaping Micael Myers starts to stalk a teenage girl Laurie Strode, this masked sociopath will target her friends and try to kill her as well. This horror movie has its legacy, until present time, he won’t stop until the last girl is dead. This franchise lasts for 40 years.
The movie had a very limited budget of only 325.000$, but the profit was sky-high around 70.000.000$, which categorizes this slash-genre horror among the most profitable movies ever made. When released Halloween caused numerous critics and disturbances, for example, it was criticized that is inciting violence and sadistic behavior. This horror has a strong message for promiscuous people. Well, it’s not hard to conclude that all of Michael Myers’s victims are problematic individuals with many vices and flaws.
4Sinister (2012)

Directed by Scott Derrickson and with Ethan Hawke in the main role. This horror movie justifies its name and reputation. The action takes place in a small town in Pennsylvania where the main character of this movie Ellison Oswalt bought a house with a dark past. The whole family of Stevenson was murdered there by hanging.
Our protagonist is a writer and he already had one best seller “Kentucky Blood “, but after a couple of setbacks, he wants to write a new novel inspired by the Stevenson family case. That’s why he convinced his family to move into a new hostile environment so he could get all inspiration he needs.
The situation gets more complex after he finds an old movie projector and a couple of old homemade videos where all family members were brutally executed by the camera operator(or someone who made that film).
The oldest video dates back to 1966 and it is called “Pool Party 1966”. His 7 eyers old daughter Ashley starts to see ghosts and Elison discovers the presence of the strange creature in one of the films. He later discovers the horrifying truth, that creature in homemade videos is Bughuul, the ancient Babylonian god.
Sitinster thing about him is that he is consuming and taking the souls of innocent children, making them kill other family members. This horror movie has a lot to offer, from quick fleshy images, and sharp sound effects to constant tension and expectations for something bad to happen.
Almost the whole action takes place during the night in dark places in the house, especially in the attic, where evil constantly lurks. Our main character is going towards those spooky places completely alone with a flashlight, almost like he is expecting to get jumped by someone or something. If you consider and analyze the viewer’s heart rate, this is the scariest movie ever made.
5Texas chainsaw massacre (1974)

This low-budget horror movie is a pioneer of the slash genre directed by Tobe Hooper, movie has only 140.000$ at its disposal and unknown and unfamiliar faces as the main protagonist. The movie was inspired by the crimes of notorious murderer Ed Gein.
Tobe Hooper had a huge issue finding a distributor due to violent and explicit scenes. This horror has created another iconic protagonist, a sadistic serial killer Leather Face and his cannibalistic family.
The Texas chainsaw massacre, like a horror Halloween, highlights that we all can become a victim of serial killers and psychopaths like Leather Face or Michale Myers. Real monsters in human form are out there lurking and expecting the next victim.
This film was a great success it earned almost 30.000.000.$ back then in 1974, that is roughly around 150.000.000$ (today’s value). It has its sequels and remakes but none of them were successful like the first one.
6The Omen (1976)

If you are a fan of dark property and apocalypse announcements this is the right movie for you. What is more terrifying than the rising of the antichrist, who will bring all possible miseries and troubles to this world?
Directed by Richard Donner and starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, the dark and depressive atmosphere overwhelms this movie. The whole action is based on the ancient biblical property that Satan’s son will emerge when Jews return to Zion, then the comet will appear in the sky and Roman Empire will rise again.
This horror continuously follows how things are getting worse from the moment Damian(antichrist) is born until his father Robert Thorn( Gregory Peck) finds out the horrifying truth about “his son’s” true origin.
Skeptical at the beginning Robert Thorn is ignoring the warnings from Father Brennan, but he gets suspicious after weird events related to his son Damian. Additional proofs are provided by photographer Keith Jennings. He shows black shadows on photographs of people who are marked for death.
This horror is also intense and breathtaking race against time to prevent the apocalypse and save mankind. It has a remake from 2006 directed by John Moor and starring Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles.
7The Shining (1980)

This psychological horror is based on Steven King’s novel, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall this is one of the greatest films in the horror genre ever made. It received some critiques from Steven King himself because the scenario was not written exactly according to the book. Another controversy about this movie is that received two negative nominations- Razzies for Worst Director and Worst Actress for Shelly Duvall.
Nevertheless, this film has a great reputation, 43 years after its release. Jack Nicholson portrayed his character Jack Torrance flawlessly. He had a great impact on this movie managing to be equally scary and funny at certain moments.
Jack Torrance is a writer by profession he accepts the offer to become a caretaker of ” Over Look Hotel “deep in the mountains. He is melancholic at the beginning and used to have drinking problems. The hotel has a disturbing past, a former caretaker killed his own family and many people there died violently.
Many ghosts dwell there and Jack Torrance’s son Danny has telepathic abilities and he can see them. His gift is recognized by the hotel’s cook Dick Harollann. Danny is communicating with his imaginary friend Tony and starts to see other ghosts and entities like two creepy sibling sisters in a hallway.
Jack Torrance gets gradually possessed by evil spirits and driven into madness. He becomes more violent and aggressive, eventually trying to kill his own family. The scene when Jack Nicholson slams the door with an axe and then pronounces a famous sentence (quote): “Here’s Jonny” is iconic and legendary even today.
8Conjuring (2013)

This horror film is based on true events and it follows the actions of two demonologists and a married couple Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga). They will try to help a 6-member family Perron. House that the family bought in Harrisville seems to be haunted.
This spooky place is full of spirits and particularly hostile demonic entity. Many paranormal and unexplainable activities start happening and the situation gets continuously worse. The wicked entity becomes more aggressive and targets the whole family, eventually, it will try to completely possess the mother of this family.
Ed and Lorraine Warren are discovering the house’s dark past and surrounding property. The harsh truth emerges, that this house belonged to the accused witch Bathsheba Sherman who sacrificed her baby to the devil and cursed anyone who tried to take her land. Now, it’s a race against time and dark forces and a fight for the home and soul of Carolyn Perron. The movie is directed by James Wan and it has awesome special effects, flashy images, and great sound capabilities.
9Witch (2015)

This is a folk horror movie directed by Robbert Eggers in his debut. The main roles belong to Anya Taylor- Joy, Ralph Ineson, and Kate Dickie. In the center of the story is a family who is terrorized by an evil witch. The action took place in the 1630s in New England. This family is banished from the Puritan settlement over a religious dispute.
They decided to go further into the wild and try to make a home with a farm near the dark forest. During these uncertain and unpredictable times, people were superstitious, in constant fear of the devil, witches, and other evil forces. The whole atmosphere in this film is dark and depressing.
Cloudy rainy days and dark cold nights dominate here, and the family is trying to survive in this harsh landscape. They often have a problem with food shortages, completely isolated they are missing other necessities for living.
The situation gets more complex when Thomasine (Anya Taylor- Joy) plays peekaboo with her baby brother Samuel at the edge of the forest. Samuel mysteriously disappears, and later it is revealed that a witch from the forest snatched him and killed an unbaptized baby boy.
The position of our main character Thomasine becomes even harder when her brother Caleb also disappears in the woods. Thomasin was supposed to take care of him but he rushed with the dog in the forest because he spotted a rabbit.
Thomasin loses his brother there and Caleb came across a small hovel where he gets kissed by the witch. She had reported her’s brother missing and her father William is waiting for morning to try to find him.
Eventually, Caleb shows up, in a bad condition, he is having a fever and passes out in front of his father Wiliam, and sister Thomasin. After pain and agony along with terrible nightmares, Caleb dies. This was a devastating blow for a whole family.
Tomasine gets accused by her father and the rest of the family, that she is a witch, Thomasine tries to defend herself by accusing her twin baby sisters of communicating with a goat(Black Philip, the manifestation of the devil).
In the end, that is the greatest strength of The Witch – that the audience will see in it what they want to see, or believe. But through Thomasin’s eyes, it takes on its reality, a reality we experience through her devotion, her disavowal, and, ultimately, her defiance.
10The Exorcist (1973)

There is no need for a special introduction when we are talking about this famous horror. This is an adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s bestseller and directed by William Friedkin this film will guarantee you plenty of spine-chilling and hair-raising moments. The story follows a girl who is possessed by the devil.
This movie is well-known for mass hysteria all around the country, from protests because of the controversial subject to mass reports of nausea and fainting in the audience. It can be a very traumatic experience, especially for someone who watches for the first time.
Priest has to collect enough evidence to perform an exorcism while the girl’s state gets worse as more time passes. The demon inside her will try to completely control her mind and defile her body. The stage is set for an exhausting battle between the faith of the exorcist and the stubbornness of the devil, who wants the girl’s soul so desperately.
